Computer control was too expensive to contemplate in the early days (computer rental was over a million dollars), so a variety of techniques were tried: punched paper tape (Babbit’s work on the RCA machine), recorded control signals (Subotnik’s Butterflies) and elaborate digital sequencers (early Tangerine Dream). Some decent music was produced this way, but it was still hard work and the results were not really that complex.
