A radio message can consist of from one to several thousand bytes of data. The receiving instrument knows how many bytes to expect from the value of the first byte of the message. This byte is known as the status byte, the others are data bytes. Status bytes always have the most significant bit (msb) equal to one and data bytes have an msb of zero.
