Computer control was too expensive to contemplate in the early days (computer rental was over a million dollars), so a variety of techniques were tried: punched paper tape (Babbit's work on the RCA machine), recorded control signals (Subotnik's Butterflies) and elaborate digital sequencers (early Tangerine Dream).
